課程概述 |
這門課將檢視civil society以及public sphere這兩個概念的起源、變異以及相關的重要爭議，並回到台灣歷史的脈絡中來理解。我們首先將閱讀經典文獻，之後討論幾個包括民主轉型、差異與團結、公共領域情感溝通以及公民社會的社團型態等重要相關議題；最後我們將回到台灣的個案，同時輔以中國的個案討論，以掌握非西方民主國家，特別是華人社會的特殊經驗。

課程目標 |
整體而言，這門討論課的主要目的是藉由回答下面的幾個問題，以釐清這些重要政治社會學概念的歷史與當代意涵：
Are civil society and public sphere in fact useful concepts for understanding political development and democratic transition in Taiwan? If so, what is their analytical power? Does the civil society perspective offer practical strategies for democracy, or is this merely a passing intellectual fad?

課程要求 |
1. 一門seminar的成功，取決於課堂的討論品質。所以，每個學生都必須閱讀完指定內容，全程出席、準時上下課，並且積極主動參與討論(20% of grade)。
2. 自行分散選擇六周主題，針對指定閱讀內容寫作一千五百字之內的短報告，報告中請緊依循著文獻的討論，尋找並回應該週主題背後的問題意識。請以電子郵件在上課前一天傍晚五點鐘之前email給所有的課堂參與者。(30% of grade; 若繳交時間過於集中將被扣分)
3. 每次課堂都有一位指定同學負責準備2-3頁的上課”issues paper”，這個issues paper應當找出該週閱讀文章中的主要議題及其相關討論或辯論。請以電子郵件在上課前一天傍晚五點鐘之前email給所有的課堂參與者，讓大家有時間思考並準備回應(10% of grade)。
4. 期末報告：你可以選擇課堂中任何一個主題，延伸寫作以該主題領域文獻評述為主的論文；或延伸本學期任一主題嘗試寫一個研究計畫書。長度大約十到十五頁，期末考那週交(40% of grade)。請於第十二週時交一頁的計畫大要（主題說明的部分至少半頁，並附上不少於八篇的書目）。.
